Last year the Opera Company of Croatian National Theatre in Rijeka initiated an International Competition for Young Opera Singers and named it after one of the most acclaimed dramatic sopranos of the 20th century – Zinka Milanov. The first competition gathered 74 young singers from all over the world, along with renowned members of the jury: Kms Olivera Miljaković, stage director Fabrizio Melano, conductor Tibor Bogányi, artist managers Kalle Kanttila and Mariano Horak, as well as initiators of the Competition – Rijeka Opera Company director Marin Blažević, and Vlatka Oršanić, “Zinka Milanov” Competition director.
The Call for Participation in the 2nd International Competition for Young Opera Singers “Zinka Milanov” is now open. Application deadline is April 25, 2016. The Competition will take place at the Croatian National Theatre in Rijeka, June 27 – July 2, 2016.
This year we are introducing two novelties to the Competition:
– the age limit of the applicants is from 21 to 35 years of age;
– in the preliminary phase of the Competition the contestants are asked to send an audio recording of one aria from an opera of their choice, along with their application; the jury will select 80 contestants until May 15.
This year`s jury is comprised of distinguished singers, vocal pedagogues, opera company directors and artist managers: Kms Olivera Miljaković, Katrin König, Mariano Horak, Alessandro Di Gloria, Carl Unander-Scharin, Kalle Kanttilla, Vlatka Oršanić.
. The Competition finale and concert with the Orchestra of Opera will take place on July 2, 2016 in the grand auditorium of Croatian National Theater in Rijeka. The finals concert will be conducted by th principal conductor of the Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra – maestro Tibor Bogányi.
Let us remind you that the third prize of the International Competition for Young Opera Singers “Zinka Milanov” in 2015 went to baritone Domen Križaj from Slovenia, the second to tenor Ibrahim Yesilay from Turkey and the winner was soprano Ana Petričević from Croatia, who also won the Audience Award. Moreover, Ana Petričević and Domen Križaj won the Rijeka Opera Special Awards. In June 2016 Ana Petričević is going to perform the role of Maddalena di Coigny in the renewal of this seasons’ premiere opera Andrea Chénier whereas Domen Križaj was invited to perform in the role of Albert in our forthcoming production of Massenet`s Werther. In addition, the Opera Company in Rijeka has already engaged the winner of the second award, Ibrahim Yesialy, to perform tenor arias in Johann Sebastian Bach’s St John Passion on March 24, under the baton of maestro Tibor Bogányi.
