Due to the global situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the Zinka Milanov International Competition for Young Opera Singers, which was to be held this year, has been postponed to 2021.
Singers between the ages of 21 and 35 from all over the world gathered in Rijeka, at the Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc for the Zinka Milanov International Competition. In the first phase of the competition, young singers presented themselves to an international jury consisting of respected and world-renowened names of the opera world – directors, conductors, opera singers, and agents. In the final of the competition, the top ten competitors performed in front of the audience at a gala concert with the Rijeka Symphony Orchestra.
At a time when such socializing and competition is impossible, we fondly remember all the competitors, all the stages of the competition until this year, the tense and uncertain moments, the great pleasure and joy that youth and classical music bring. Several of the contestants who received the highest marks later received the exceptional opportunity to perform in the productions of the organizer, the Rijeka Theatre. For example, Ibrahim Yesilay performed in Bach’s «St. John Passion,» Ana Petričević portrayed Desdemona in «Othello,» Domen Križaj performed in the role of Albert in «Werther,» and Luka Ortar, who first sang the role of the King of Egypt in «Aida,» then appeared as Colline in «La Bohème,» Monanto in «Othello,» Escamillo in «Carmen,» Sulejman in «Nikola Šubić Zrinjski,» King Mark in «Tristan and Isolde,» and in the 2019/2020 season he became a soloist of the Rijeka Opera Ensemble! So anything is possible!
Congratulations to all those who were part of the competition! We look forward to welcoming you to our Theatre in a year, with all those who are returning or arriving for the first time!
